These are some dark days for Bay Area sports

There's something toxic emanating from California and it isn't the ever present smog that lingers over Los Angeles.

That stench is the the Niners secondary getting torched for big-play after big-play or the offensive line festering in the Bayou with six sacks. It's the most meddlesome owner in pro-sports embarrassing a once proud franchise on national television yet again. It's a .238 winning percentage for a young inexperienced head coach that became mired in the "Commitment to Excrement" coming out of Raider camp these days.

Al Davis recieved due reverence from his critics for what he has done for the NFL, but lets not ignore reality. The man is bad for the Raiders and he must go in order for this team to start winning again. Anybody who dislikes every head coach he hires and gives Javon Walker $55 million dollars needs to step down. It's just sad because because JaMarcus Russell has such potential with that big arm and McFadden has the makings of a stud in the early going.

The Niners retire Steve Young's jersey this weekend, conjuring memories of Brent jones and the Eddie DeBartolo teams that used to dominate the NFL. A bounce back game from J.T. O'Sullivan and the gang would certainly make the game more special and complete the "passing the torch" symbolism that you know FOX will dig up, but the cynic in me can see Matt Cassell emerging as best QB on the field.

Over in China Basin, Third and King just became a little gloomier with another losing season and the departure of a figure that saved baseball in San Francisco. The hint of steroids from one of the best and an albatross of a contract to one of the worst may have tainted his legacy, but the man bled orange and black. It must kill him that the Dodgers are adding to the curse-riddled history of Wrigley field.

Well, this has been an embarrassing week to be a Bay Area sports fan and a long, painful, slide for  franchises that have such a long history of winning, but for all the gloom and doom, there are better days ahead...At least lets hope so.

  1. I feel ya man, one of my best friends is Niners fan. On gamedays we make fun of him by going over to his tom rathman autographed jersey and stroking it as we weep.

I know it's cruel but it's just so much fun.

     Good post, Later
