The NBA is completely bonkers right now. With less than two weeks until season’s tip-off, players are being flipped faster than flapjacks at IHOP. Chris Paul has been perfecting his start-and-stop from the comfort of his living room. Dwight Howard can't seem to decipher his own feelings about the Magic. Lamar Odom, as collateral from the Paul fall-out, whined his way to the Mavs, who were spurned earlier in the week by Tyson Chandler (Knicks). Chauncey Billups took his frequent flier miles to the Clips (though he could be dealt again by the time I finish this sentence) and Big Baby was swapped for Brandon Bass.

The Milwaukee Bucks traded Charlie Bell and Dan Gadzurik to the Golden State Warrios for Corey Magette.
This is a good move for both teams and potentially a great move for Milwuakee.

For starters, welcome back Rip Hamilton! With an impressive 18 points this game against the Golden State Warriors, Rip made sure his return was not overseen. Although Rip was the talk of the game, Rodney Stuckey was the point leader with an impressive 29 points this game.

In order to be successful in basketball, a team has to protect the ball, play solid defense and make free throws, among other things. The Grizzlies did none of those on Wednesday as they fell to Golden State. Specifically, the Grizzlies need to figure out how to play from ahead. They know plenty about playing from behind, but they can't seem to hold on to their lead. This season they are getting off to good starts but allowing their opponents to chip away at their lead, and it happened again against the Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors can score, and hey found some youngsters that will fit right in. Summer in Vegas was hot.
Anthony Randolph had a nice year for the Warriors last year. He exploded this summer averaging 27 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. He dominated. There will be a lot more playing time for him his year.

The people who saw the 2009 NBA Draft on Thursday were in for a special treat when they saw Blake Griffin go No. 1.
Very predictable however.
Then, Hasheem Thabeet went No. 2, which was also predictable. Then things got a bit interesting.

The Hawks appear to be sending both backup point guards to Golden State for Jamal Crawford. This brings makes signing Mike Bibby more imperative. To do so, they may not match offers that Marvin Williams receives. Acie Law and Speedy Claxton both are being shipped. Neither really played much last year. Joe Johnson lead the team in assist even though he isn't a point guard. I doubt they will use him as one. Andre Miller and Jason Kidd are both available on the market. My bet is on Bibby returning. Crawford could play the point, but he would be better off as the 2 guard. He did average 4.4 assist along wth 19.7 points.

Fourth Quarter continued.
6:20 Commit to the rebound! COMMIT!!! Crawford and Turiaf both could have taken an offensive rebound. Both got out of the way of the other. Hornets grabbed it. Pathetic.

Fourth Quarter begins.
11:43 Crawford has been driving tonight. Crawford has done well done. 26 after that three-point play.
10:45 Warriors are playing excellent defense this quarter but it's not enough. The lead is down to two.

Third Quarter continued.
4:35 Crawford just walked in for a lay-up on a half-court set. I'll take it.
3:50 David West goes to the spot he likes to shoot from. Stands there and wait. Chris Paul drives, draws the defense, dishes on a string. 2 easy points for the Hornets. That's talent.

Third Quarter begins.
10:14 Ronny Turiaf was slow getting up the court. He caught the ball then passed it from just a yard beyond the mid-court line, then made his way back towards our basket. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with him when I realized that his pass went to an open Anthony Morrow. I like Ronny Turiaf.

Second Quarter continued.
5:04 Ronny Turiaf just blocked a HUUUUGE dunk attempt. He came from under the rim. It was a reverse block. Incredible.
4:34 I dislike it any time opponents are allowed to score on their second put back of the same shot. That's just poor boxing out. Under any circumstance.

Second Quarter begins.
9:50 Jamal Crawford drained his third three already. This is both good and bad. Good because draining threes is good. Bad because it means Jamal has reason to believe he shoot should a lot of threes, which we don't need. Jamal Crawford is not a great 3-point shooter.

First quarter continued.
5:15 Just realized that Rob Kurz is in for Ronny Turiaf because he made a jump shot. I like Rob Kurz.
4:43 The Hornets' Marks just got called for a moving screen. First moving screen call I've ever seen.

I just didn't click for the Warriors tonight. They started off the night with a horrible 1-7 shooting and seemed like they could not get things going. The warriors soon began to play together and move the ball around to get open shots. Stephen Jackson led the way with 8 assists including a couple nice dishes to Andris Beidrins. The Warriors allowed the Bobcats to score a season high 61 in the first half. Things settle a bit for the Warriors in the third when everything seemed to be going down for the Warriors. They outscored to Bobcats 28-18 in the third until about 2 minutes left in the third when the Cats rallied off 10 unanswered to reclaim the lead going into the fourth. The fourth quarter was slow for both teams until the later minutes when the two teams went score for score. Raymond Felton, of the Bobcats, tied the game late in the fourth with a runner in the lane. With 18 seconds left Boris Diaw, of the Bobcats intentionally fouled stephen Jackson. An odd foul it was Jackson went on to make both free throws. with next to nothing on the clock Diaw redeams himself with a dagger 3 pointer with 2.9 seconds left. The Warriors end of throwing the ball away trying to get the ball in play.

This is becoming the ritual quote after every Golden State Warriors game. Yes, we've lost/let go of B Diddy. Yes we've lost Pietrus (which is fine by me), Barnes, and Harrington (again, fine by me). Yes, we don't have a true point guard. So given all these factores, why does Nellie keep returning to a small line-up?

I was sinking into the old, tattered, second-hand couch at my girlfriend’s place the other night, demanding… pleading… begging her and her roommates to “allow” us to watch something other than the titillating search for Paris Hilton’s new BFF. After some expert debating, (big shout out to 10th grade debate teacher Mrs. Posner) I was able to enforce my will to, not only change the channel, but change it to sports (translation: the six girls allowed the change based almost purely on the fact that their favorite gay guy/girl, Onch, had already been kicked off. TTYN.) One of the girls is from Los Angels and loves her Lakers, so if the channel was changing, due to the decibel of her voice, there was only one option. You should be proud and I should be happy, right? I was just able to complete the near impossible: getting six girls in their early 20s to change the TV from a show of girls and gay guys gossiping, yelling, drinking and being “fabulous,” to sports. A point for the guys, right?

As a California transplant living in Denver, the match-up in the Western Conference between the Nuggets and the Golden State Warriors is arguably the one I watch the closest. The Memphis Grizzlies posted their first-ever 2-0 start at home by dominating the fourth quarter for a 90-79 win over the Golden State Warriors on Monday at the FedEx Forum. Second-year player Rudy Gay and rookies Marc Gasol and O.J. Mayo combined for 48 of the team's points. Gay's production was one of the keys to the game coming in for the Grizz, who expected to need around 30 points from him in order to win. The UCONN product nailed a couple of 3's early in the game but struggled in the second half. However, just when it seemed that it might not be his night, Gay hit a driving layup and a pair of consecutive jumpers late in the third quarter to give the Grizz the lead for good. The team closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to lead 73-67 entering the final frame. Gay finished with 14 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Part of being a fan of the Warriors is dealing with heartbreakingly narrow losses and aggrivating lead switches. Any NBA fan knows that once you stick to a team, there is a certain amount of sleep to lose over it. Tonight was another one of those nights where perhaps pessimism had most fans not expecting what the Dubs ended up putting out; and once everyone was out of their seats for a season-opener win, Chris Paul and the Hornets swarmed back in to beat Golden State 108-105.

thanks tony.psd for the sweet poster!
It has been a rough off season for Golden State Warriors fans. Baron Davis left the Bay for Los Angelas' lesser team, Monta Ellis and CJ Watson are out for next week's season opener, and we're all still reeling from having a 48-34 season and not making the playoffs. Narrowly, the Dubs missed a chance at history two years in a row by tanking at the end of the year and narrowly failing to win 50 games; thus becoming the first team to win 50 games and not make the playoffs.

So much for a quiet, uneventful Summer vacaction for the Dubs! Seemingly every day the team has made a new transaction, after the surprise opt-out of team leader Baron Davis. I am glad it was July 11th. Having that free 7.11 oz slurpee was a blessing in the summer heat. Lets go over what has happened on 7/11.
Football: Brett Favre wants his release. This is an interesting story. I never put pen to paper on this, but I always maintained (as did Tony from PTI) that Favre would be back for the season. Favre wants to play, but the Packers want to move on. What to do, what to do? If I am Favre, the first teams I look at are Minnesota and Baltimore.

On the heels of the poor Clippers being spurned by Elton Brand (more on that in the coming days) in hilarious fashing, the Lakers seem to have been hit just as hard. Word on the proverbial street (or more likely, on the off ramp of the information super highway) is that Ronny Turiaf has agreed, tentatively to play for the Golden State Warriors for $17 million over 4 years ( http://www.pe.com/sports/basketball/breakout/stories/PE_Sports_Local_S_turiaf_09.47b3657.html). What do I think about this, you ask? Good question, you. I get the same feeling that I got when Golden State signed Derek Fisher for $37 million over 6 years, and that is that Golden State has NO idea how to properly run a team. I loved Ronny on the Lakers. I loved making jokes with my friend about Phil Jackson yelling at Ronny at practice claiming that he “has no heart”, along with 4 billion other heart related comments (for those of you who don’t know, Ronny was diagnosed with an enlarged aortic root and required open heart surgery at the beginning of the 2005 NBA season). It does bother me slightly, that the Lakers had a chance to dump Ronny over this heart condition but chose to stick with it, pay his salary AND cover the expenses for his surgery, and he goes his own way once he is a restricted free agent. I know he must look out for himself, but it always bothers me with loyalty is thrown by the wayside.

Should this really be a surprise? After all, didn't the NBA Players' Union file a grievance after the Golden State Warriors tried to void the rest of their contract with Latrell Sprewell? You remember: Spree was angry at new head coach P.J. Carlesimo's telling him to "put some mustard on those passes" and subsequently grabbed Carlesimo twice around the neck.

If you haven’t been to ESPN’s “Lottery Mock Draft” don’t worry about it. I’ll save you the trip. If you run 100 mock drafts 100 of them will come up with Warriors grabbing freshmen center Kosta Koufos out of Ohio. While he is a good center, don’t be fooled by the pedigree. This is no Greg Oden.

Now that's more like it. The Celtics have put the Hawks on the ropes with a resounding and convincing victory in game 5 last night. Everything that was going wrong for Boston in games 3 and 4 seems to have been solved by playing in front of their home crowd, and similarly, everything that was going right for the Hawks evaporated into thin air as the road team. I suppose that it just goes to show how huge an advantage a raucous home crowd can be in a playoff series. That being said, I think that the Celtics are poised to break the cycle in this series and finish the Hawks off in game 6 in Atlanta.

There’s been a huge hullabaloo over the questionable call (and that’s putting it as politely and as PC and as grossly understated as possible), that went in the favor of the NBA’s favorite son, well his team the Cleveland Cavaliers anyway, and effectively screwed over the hard-working, young 76ers, as well as the loud-talking Washington Wizards. Dropping both into situations, that should, quite frankly, not be—or, not necessarily be.

Losing back-to-back games in the NBA is not a big deal, it happens to the best of teams. You play 82 games and it's bound to happen here and there. Last year it happened here, there, then, now, yesterday, and tomorrow for the Boston Celtics. But that was last year.

Some general thoughts on Super Bowl 42, the Santana trade, the Gasol trade
Point differential and why this is the biggest upset in NFL History:
Everyone is (correctly) highlighting the fact that it seems incredible that the 16-0 Patriots could lose to a 10-6 Giants team that most people didn't expect to get past the first round of the playoffs. But I like to look at point differential as a true measure of a teams greatness, and doing this makes the Patriots loss even more ridiculous than it does when looking at records alone.

OAKLAND –
Coming off a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves the Golden State Warriors continued to play their best against the sinking New Jersey nets. Despite an injured Vince Carter, the Nets did explode in the second quarter slowing the tempo of the Warriors who lead in the first quarter. Vince Carter scored 29 points and Richard Jefferson scored 34 points for the Nets, who are on their worst longest losing streak in three years. Josh Boone also had 21 points and 17 rebounds. Not much could stop Monta Ellis who scored his career-high 39 points. Golden State scored 22 consecutive points and blew a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter of their 121-119 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

Good teams find ways to win games and bad teams find ways to lose them. In typical fashion for this year the Bulls managed to lose in the 2nd half of the game. They managed to compete with the Golden State Warriors and make it look like an actual game... for the first half. But they once again fell apart towards the end. Yes Ben Gordon scored 29 and Andres Nocioni scored 28. Those are nice statistics, but when the game is one the line, the Bulls still do not have a clue how to finish.

Hey Mavs fans, I had the pleasure of enjoying two games this week in which the two least popular teams in the NBA got beat by the Mavericks. And by "two least popular teams", I mean least popular with me. (Golden State Warriors, least popular, and Miami Heat, second least popular) Dallas was strong and looked good against Golden State leading most of that game at home on Wednesday. I hate to say it was a blow out because really Golden State can score so quickly, that itisn 't a blow out until the game is over. That being said, I'm glad Dallas blew Golden State out making a statement at home. The Mavericks have certainly turned the tables on the Warriors this season going 2-0 this season against them, after of course losing every regular season game against them last year.

The National Basketball Association exhibits two kinds of NBA players. One is the wildebeast. The other is the lion. What do you mean?
I mean that there are players in the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trailblazers, Los Angeles Clippers, Seattle Sonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, New Orleans, and I apologize if I left anyone out, who cow towe to team owners, peer groups, and making money, glitz, glamor, being effeminate, etc. There are also professional basketball players who cow towe to their concept of self. They always go to their strength. Their strength resides in their hearts and minds. They believe in who they are because they know who they are. Money, team owners, peer groups, glitz, glamor, being effeminate, etc. are particles of dust when juxtaposing them to their desire to perform to their greatest abilities as a professional basketball player.
