If you haven’t been to ESPN’s “Lottery Mock Draft” don’t worry about it. I’ll save you the trip. If you run 100 mock drafts 100 of them will come up with Warriors grabbing freshmen center Kosta Koufos out of Ohio. While he is a good center, don’t be fooled by the pedigree. This is no Greg Oden.

The Warriors are in the lottery, and the odds of them taking a top 5 pick are very similar to the odds of me filling a Dixie cup with urine when I am standing across the room. (Note: I haven’t actually tried this.) And unless something ridiculous happens and DeAndre Jordan falls, the only 7 footer the Golden State will touch will be this guy, which scares me.

I will admit it though I am scared only out of my own prejudices. Kosta Koufus is Greek, and he played his high school basketball here in the states. But he eerily reminds me of Darko Milicic and Zarko Cabarkapa and all of those other 7 foot busts, who came out the former Soviet Block. They hop on a plan realize that the guys over here are fast and they jump high and leave 2 million US dollars richer. (Forgive me Arvydas Sabonis.) And with guys out there like Tyson “I average 7 points a Game in the Playoffs” Chandler out there making 10.5 million a year there is good reason to be scared. God knows what the Warriors could have done if they got the 10 mil a year they were paying Adonal Foyle back.

Continue reading "Should the Warriors draft Kosta Koufos"

After years of being bludgeoned into apathy by 13 years of sub par squads, we’ve got something to cheer about. Potential. And it’s not that “In a couple years maybe” potential. It’s that right here, right now, bear done and do it potential.

It used to be that Warriors jerseys were hidden away like old Wham! cassettes. Anyone who has been to the Coliseum knows there is an enthusiastic, heart-thumping aura overtaking the building every time Baron takes the floor.

I had never believed in the importance of “locker room” guys. I’d always thought that talent was talent. After 3 years of watching sleepy-faced Dunleavy miss open shots and the entire team play (dare I say) willy-nilly defense, I’ve come to appreciate the ability to fire guys up. Who’d have thought that a gun-toting wild man and disciplineless street-baller would transform the franchise to a credible state?

Continue reading "Warriors Have a Bright Future"
